The Problem- Quickly accessing websites

Are you having a hard time remembering the address to your favorite website? Do you wish there was an easy way to access a webpage without having to use bookmarks or favorites? Well you are not alone! There is an easy way that you can get access to that pesky webpage.

I know you are now asking what's the point? Well let me tell you. WebPage addresses, besides being difficult to remember, are case-sensitive. This means you need to type in the identical address every time! In the hectic classroom setting, you might not have enough time to type in the website address every period to record attendance, let alone accomplish other daily tasks.

The quick and easy solution is to follow these 9 steps and you will be easily accessing those important webpages.

Important Terms
Before we begin, lets go over some common terms that you will see in this guide. These terms will be italicized throughout the guide for quick identification.

Internet Explorer- a graphic web browser developed by Microsoft included in Microsoft
Windows operating system

Web address- A unique identifier for a resource of information that is accessed using a graphic web browser

Toolbar- A panel on which icons, symbols, menus, or buttons can be placed

Scroll- An act of moving up or down a list

Desktop- The computer screen you see when an operating system opens

Desktop Icon- A image found on your computer screen to quickly access programs

Address Bar- A toolbar in a graphic web browser where a web-address is typed

H: Drive- A personal drive to save information and can be accessed on any Vernon computer


The Solution:
Creating a Desktop Icon for WebPages &
Saving them to a personal H: Drive

Step 1- Create a Folder on your Desktop

a) Right click anywhere on the Desktop screen
b)
Scroll down to New--> Folder





c) Rename Folder -
Choose something easy to remember and identify
I picked “Websites”






Step 2- Open Internet Explorer
Find the Desktop Icon and double click



Step 3- Type in the desired Web Address in the Address Bar

a. For example type, http://www.power.vtsd.com/teachers in Address Bar
b. Hit enter on keyboard



Step 4- Create a Desktop Icon for your Web address

a) Click File on Internet Explorer toolbar
b)
Scroll down to Send---> Shortcut to Desktop
c) Double-Click

Step 5- Minimize Internet Explorer

a) Look for the _ in upper Right corner of window
b) Click Once to Minimize the window
c) You can access webpage later
- You can also close Window if not needed
a) Click X in top right corner



Step 6- Place Desktop Icon into Folder

a) Click on Desktop Icon(once) and hold

b) Drag Desktop Icon into folder and release mouse


Step 7- Check folder content then copy for movement

a) Double Click on your new Folder



b) Your Content will Look like this.

Notice how the icon is special to the website.
It is easy to identify!!


c) Close folder and copy for movement
1. Right click on Folder
2. Scroll down to Copy- click once


Step 8- Access your
H:Drive

a) Open My Computer- Double Click on Icon
b) Open H:Drive- Double Click on Icon


Step 9- Paste Folder into
H:Drive

a) Right click anywhere in H:Drive
b) Scroll down list and click Paste


Your Website Icons can now be accessed anywhere at School!


Maintenance Tips

Here are some general troubleshooting tips to help you through the process.

What if I work at more than one computer during the day?

a. Move the Website Folder from H:Drive-

b. Copy the Website folder from H:Drive-

1. Follow Step 8 to access H:drive

c. Paste the ‘website folder’ onto computer desktops

What if the Icon of my website isn’t working?

a. the URL address might have changed

b. Access the Web address thru Internet Explorer

c. Repeat steps 3-6 to create a new desktop icon

What if I do not have Internet Explorer?

a. This can still be done using other web browsers.

b. Open Safari or Firefox

c. Check out images below for direction

2. Scroll down to "Save As"- click once
